LOS ANGELES - The Warner Grand Theatre in San Pedro is set to close January 1 for abatement work and major renovations. The storefront businesses facing 6th Street, Sacred Grounds Coffee Cafe and fINdings Art Center, will remain open and accessible through the end of June 2024.
“The Warner Grand Theatre is a community arts hub for the Harbor area. It’s important to me that we work diligently to make these needed improvements and bring the theater back and better than ever for Harbor residents and visitors,” said Councilmember Tim McOsker. “My office worked with city departments to keep the Warner Grand open for as long as we could before the renovations began, and we were able to enjoy one more holiday season with some fun, traditional performances and shows. This is a beautiful venue and every show we’ve done at the Warner Grand has been a special moment. It will come back stronger.”
The Warner Grand Theatre opened in 1931, one of three Art Deco/Moderne “neighborhood picture palaces” built by Warner Brothers Studio in the Los Angeles area. Seating for 1,489 patrons is split between a main floor orchestra and a mezzanine and balcony. While built as a movie theater, Warner Grand today hosts concerts, dance, musicals, comedy and drama, and film screenings.
The Warner Grand Theatre is owned and operated by the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA). DCA has operated the facility as a low-cost rental and presenting house with a mission to make the facility and its resources available to artists and companies from around the City, and for use by local community groups and partners.
“The Department of Cultural Affairs has operated the Warner Grand Theatre since 1996, making it an affordable resource to artists and audiences alike,” said Daniel Tarica, General Manager of the Department of Cultural Affairs. “We are excited to partner with the Bureau of Engineering to begin the process of restoring this historical landmark and enhancing accessibility to the Warner Grand Theatre for both the San Pedro and larger Los Angeles communities.”
While the theater was originally slated to close for remodeling on June 30, after reviewing the plans McOsker worked with the Bureau of Engineering and Department of Cultural Affairs to keep it open through the holiday season. Construction is expected to be completed at the end of 2025.
