“I commend Redondo Beach for reaching Functional Zero. We are all aware that homelessness remains the greatest humanitarian crisis of our time. It is a regional challenge that requires us to work together to ensure that no one city or community bears this responsibility alone. We must work collectively, and as good neighbors, to make sure our unhoused residents remain close to their communities. That allows residents to stay connected to familiar networks and services that support stability and recovery," said Councilmember Tim McOsker.
"Since 2020, Redondo Beach has leased units in an apartment building in Wilmington, through a private landlord, to house approximately 18 residents. For many years now, Wilmington has done its part with compassion and generosity to address the homeless crisis. I appreciate that Redondo Beach officials agree. For these reasons, we are collaboratively working with the City of Redondo Beach and the private landlord to transition these units to be available for Wilmington’s unhoused population.
While we all aim for Functional Zero Homelessness and are working tirelessly to achieve this, we need access to every available housing option to meet this goal. To make real, lasting progress across Los Angeles County, each community must actively participate in housing our residents and addressing homelessness within their own neighborhoods.”
